The gorilla was introduced in August 1978 as a brother car of Honda Monkey, which pioneered the genre of leisure motorcycles. The gorilla, which uses a large liter tank and a seat suitable for long-distance driving, was developed on the assumption that it will run on its own to the destination. Production was cut off in 1992, but it is still used. Production resumed in 1998 due to its high popularity in the car market. In January 1999, a special model with chrome plating on the whole body was sold.
